Pigs-In-A-Blanket
So….two weeks ago…hubs says “you know, there is a stand on south main street selling big cabbages…you should pick one up to make pigs in a blanket, cuz the leaves will make good blankets.”
I’m like, “ok…yeah…that sounds really good!”
Last week I stopped and picked one up….freakin huge!! Thought “yeah..this will work out great!” and was all excited about it.
Last night – after our supper of French toast and bacon, I commence to making pigs in a blanket. (This is around 9pm!).
I always cut around the core to loosen the leaves, then place cabbage in hot water to steam the leaves off and soften them up.
Didn’t have a pan big enough. Thought, “OK…I’ll just put a roaster full of water on the two front/back waters, get the water nice and hot and put the cabbage in there…that should do the trick.”
I got everything set up…. Roaster with water/cabbage on the burners, turned on medium high to get the water nice and hot and started making my meat mixture.
Smoke alarm starts going off. Thought “what the heck!”
Turned around and the my roaster was on fire…the air was thick with blue smoke.
“OH CRAP” moment here!
Husband comes out and says….and I do NOT lie ….”smoke alarm is going off…are they ready to eat?”
The thought of doing 15 yrs for murder is the only thing that stopped me from grabbing a kitchen knife here!
I was able to get the roaster off the stovetop and the flames out, with no help from hubster, I might add. Oh No…Wait! He DID open the patio door to let the smoke out. What a guy!!
So… now what the heck do I do with this humongous cabbage?? The leaves are as thick as my wrist and no matter what I tried to soften them up, they wouldn’t mold around the lil piggies.
Soo….an hour later - after almost burning down my house and committing murder, I grabbed the hacksaw and started to chop the heck out the cabbage!!
At 10:30pm I had TWO glasses of wine.
Tonight, we are having cabbage hotdish!
